The Truth: Oral Health Effects of Methamphetamine

Drug Addiction and Oral Health

This month, we’re focusing on a difficult subject: drug addiction. The rising rates of drug addiction in our country are heartbreaking, especially when a loved one struggles with addiction. As dental professionals, we look for oral signs of drug abuse during examinations.

While it may be a tough conversation, it’s vital to keep our patients’ best interests and overall health top of mind. If you or someone you know struggles with addiction, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline can provide assistance.

The Impact of Methamphetamine on Oral Health

As the second most widely abused recreational drug, we’ll focus on the specific oral health effects of Methamphetamine (Meth). A 2008 United Nations study reported approximately 25 million individuals worldwide used methamphetamine. However, between 2008 and 2014, this number more than doubled. By 2014, an estimated 52 million people aged 15-64 had used amphetamine-type stimulants for nonmedical purposes globally.

Long-term Meth abuse often leads to rampant tooth decay, commonly known as “Meth Mouth.” Dry mouth (xerostomia) and extended periods of poor oral hygiene primarily cause this decay.

While dry mouth is a significant risk factor for decay in any population, Meth use exacerbates this risk. The acidic nature of Meth can lower the pH level in your oral cavity, accelerating decay if proper care isn’t taken.

Treatment Options for Methamphetamine-Related Dental Issues

For patients in recovery from addiction, we can take several steps to help restore their teeth. Adding a high-concentration source of sodium fluoride can prevent new decay while we work on existing issues.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) offers a great alternative when complete restoration isn’t financially feasible. Applied topically, SDF can arrest dental caries and work alongside regular sodium fluoride to control tooth decay in the short term.

Creating a Personalized Recovery Plan

With the help of a dentist and hygienist, we can create an individualized plan based on your needs and desires. Restoring oral health may seem daunting, but we’ll support you every step of the way.

When preparing for successful tooth restoration, it’s crucial to consider lifestyle habits to avoid decay progression. We can provide resources and information to help quit tobacco use, which is common among recreational drug users. Additionally, we’ll address diet, as high-sugar intake can accelerate decay.

Our Commitment to Your Oral Health

We understand that rampant decay can leave many feeling ashamed or hopeless about their teeth. However, we’re always here to help without judgment, focusing solely on providing the best oral health care possible. If you or someone you know is ready to restore their smile on their road to recovery, we’d love to assist you.
